Justin, you could use stdeb to custom install Python packages (e.g.
numpy/scipy) while letting dpkg know about it -- thus preventing
clobbering between dpkg and distutils. See
http://github.com/astraw/stdeb . Hopefully it's pretty straightforward
to use.
