These screenshots illustrate various functionalities of the StarGenetics tool using some of the available visualizers.
Example of the Summary tab in the Fly User Interface. The Summary tab summarizes the results obtained in an experiment by phenotype and sex (click image for larger view).
Example of the Summary Tab in the Mendel's Peas User Interface. Phenotypes are indicated visually as well as with a word description by clicking on theShowbutton under Phenotype descriptionin the Summary tab (click image for larger view).
Example of the Punnett Square Tool in the Fly User Interface. In the Punnett Square tool, students can choose the parental genotypes for monohybrid and dihybrid crosses and observe the resulting genotypic ratios for all possible combinations of parental genotypes (click image for larger view).
Example of Position-effect Variegationin theDrosophilaEye.Position-effect variegation, which is the silencing of gene expression due to proximity to heterochromatin, can be explored in StarGenetics by looking at azoomed-in image of the fly eye(click image for larger view).
Example of DNA Marker Functionality in the Fly User Interface. StarGenetics supports the use of DNA markers, such as those generated by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP). This functionality is avialable in the Fly and Fish visualizers (click image for larger view).
Example of a Replica Plating Experiment in the StarGenetics Yeast User Interface. StarGenetics Yeast visualizer supports mating and non-mating experiments, as well as tetrad analysis. Before beginning an experiment, the user decides whether the experiment involves generating tetrads. If the experiment does not involve generating tetrads, then the user can click on the Non-tetrad experiment button. The Non-tetrad experimental mode has the advantage that it allows the user to build large complementation tables (click image for larger view).
Example of a Tetrad Analysis Experiment in the Yeast User Interface. StarGenetics Yeast visualizer supports tetrad analysis. Students can classify tetrads by their corresponding type: parental ditype, tetrad type, and non-parental ditype. The software then tallies the total number of each type of tetrad (click image for larger view).
