Metadata Written to Instance?

Hi All,

I've been looking thru the code, trying to determine if there's anything
that writes instance metadata to the instance as it's being added. I need
to store instance type and image ID (and perhaps other such metadata) on
each node.

I can do it in a plugin, but if there's already a framework or means for
accomplishing that, I'd appreciate any pointers.
