I don't think you can assign an existing security group as Starcluster needs to use the descrirption field to store the cluster settings.
Just log on to the Amazon web console and you will see that it has a long and funny string in the security group descrirption.

I know that you can assign "rules" to the security group created for a cluster using the "configuring security group permissions" in the starcluster config file, but I wanted to know if there was a way to have the security group assigned to be an existing security group that you have already created in AWS.
