Sorry, I have never played with creating an new AMI using StarCluster
before. I read the code a few weeks ago but then was busy with
preparing the Linux cgroups integration demo for ISC'12.

If Justin or others don't get back to you, then I can take a look at
it later this week - as I need to use this functionality myself as
well!
However, instead of waiting, you can always setup a 1 or 2 node
t1.micro StarCluster and experiment with it. As long as you are under
the 750 instance-hour, 5GB-month S3, and 30GB-month EBS limit, then
you can experiment with the free tier without worrying about cost.
