I should add:
1) before re-writing the partition table, I COULD mount the drive:
$ mount /dev/sdz1 /home
and e2fsck worked ...
$ e2fsck -f /dev/sdz1
Pass 1 ...
However, immediately after re-writing the partition table, I CANNOT do
either of these things
$ mount /dev/sdz1 /home
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
and e2fsck yields that "bad magic number" error ....
So maybe there's something going wrong in the re-writing of the partition
table?
