The problem is that I typically have a pre-existing work folder on my
laptop that I want to make available to the cluster. Hence mounting
EC2 on my laptop is not ideal.

I did the reverse tunnel + sshfs operations by hand and it works as
long as you don't forget to load your cluster ssh key in your local
ssh-agent. But as stated previously this solution might break the
cluster operations when I put my laptop to sleep.
